Veja – Ethical Sneakers that Look Good

Veja is an ecological and fair trade footwear and accessories brand that manages to hit the mark when it comes to being both ethical and fashionable. Their sneakers are made differently by using organic and fairly traded cotton; wild and fairly traded rubber; recycled plastic bottles and vegetable-tanned leather. Their products are also made in high standard factories in Brazil and their logistics network works with an association aiming to reintegrate people facing social exclusion into work. If you are one my friends reading this, stay away from the Taua white leather (pictured) as I don’t want us rocking up to the same place wearing the same shoes. Veja has shoes for men, women and kids. The kids‘ shoes rival the adult shoes in coolness. Buy Veja. Read more about the project.

Empathy Cards and Book

I love the idea behind this book There Is No Good Card For This: What to Say and Do When Life Is Scary, Awful and Unfair to People You Love. We’ve all been there and sadly the older you get, the more likely you’ll hear that crap stuff has happened to those you know and love. I doubt many of us can confidently say we’ve handled these moments with aplomb. One of the authors of the book also creates these brilliant empathy cards that are a sweet, honest and often much needed/appreciated way to tell someone you’re thinking of them and there for them when bad shit happens and you don’t quite know what to say. Like this ‘Infertility Judging‘ card or ‘Everything Happens‘ card. The creator, Emily McDowell, also has a range of cards you can send via Paperless Post to make it even easier.

Banaban Coconut Oil Sugar Body Scrub – Effective, Natural and Economical

This is hands down the best body scrub I’ve ever used. It contains only natural ingredients, turns your skin silky smooth and it’s only $12 (AUD). There’s not much in the beauty market that can claim to be natural, effective and cheap – many products that purport to do something, do little or nothing and can often command a high price tag. Banaban also make a Tropical Spice version of this scrub with cinnamon, cloves and ginger. You could probably make a scrub at home for less but let’s be honest, you’re not going to. If you aren’t into scrubs, gift it to someone that is – they will thank you, I promise. Find a stockist or buy online.

MoCU – Buy Curated Collections Of Craft Beer, Wine And Cider

MoCU (Modern Curations Gallery) is a new website a friend of mine has been working on where you can buy packs of craft beer, wine and cider that have been curated by some of the best brewers and winemakers around the world. They’ve pulled together inspired collections so you can explore and experience unique flavours, e.g. Foodie. The biggest perk here is that there are a number of beers and wines that you can’t buy anywhere else. Christmas gift for that beer loving friend or relative, sorted. There is free delivery to metro areas for orders over $50 and up to 20% off when you curate your own pack. Additionally, if you sign up you get access to member only offers and sales. The site has predominantly craft beers now with more wine and cider to follow. Shop the collections.

Paris Texas Boutique

I wish I enjoyed clothes shopping more than I do. I find the pressure of investing in pieces that tick the boxes of quality, value, longevity and uniqueness all a bit offputting. So when I do need something new, I head to Paris Texas Boutique in Surry Hills. I love it because the owner, Annette Verrusio, doubles as a bit of a stylist for me. She always suggests a few pieces that I wouldn’t normally pick up at first glance but usually end up loving. She pushes me out of my comfort zone. Annette started the shop 10 years ago and she’s a big supporter of Australian and emerging designer labels. Apart from women’s clothing, there’s a great range of men’s clothing, as well as footwear, accessories, homeware and beauty. A one stop shop. Brands include Life With Bird, Isla, Blessed Are The Meek, Assembly, Spring Court, Samantha Wills, and many more. There is an online shop but it doesn’t represent the great variety that’s in store. Visit the store at 561 Bourke Street, Surry Hills, Sydney or online at their websiteFacebook and Instagram
